Important Poker Terminology
Mood:  cool
Last time I told you about poker tools that are able to help you out as you study and learn more about money poker sites. The first tool you should obtain is an online poker dictionary since it’ll be challenging to read in depth poker articles if you don’t know the most important poker terminology. The one problem with my suggestion, though, is that so many words will be listed that you won’t know where to start! To help out, I am going to mention a small number of the poker terms that I deem most vital for someone learning on a Full Tilt Poker download (or whatever site you decide to play on). Read about these terms first as they’re common and most likely to pop up when you start reading poker literature.

The terms I think you should learn first and foremost have already been mentioned in this blog, so read my older articles if you haven’t done so yet. ”Bankroll management” and “variance” are, without a doubt, some of the most important terms in poker. On all sites, including a Bwin Poker download, you might be the victim of some bad beats. You need a suitable bankroll just in case the worst happens.

At the beginning a new player should also learn about the “rake”. The rake is the money taken from every pot or prize pool by the host of the poker game. As an example, if you use a Titanpoker bonus code and play at the no-limit tables, the site will take about 5% of each pot at your table. Rake will differ between sites, and there is a maximum amount that will be taken for each pot.

Another term to know about is “position”. Previously we talked about the strength of your cards in the poker hands order article, but we didn’t talk about position at all. The person last to act post flop in every pot has the best position, and you will win pots more frequently when you’re in position. You should be playing fewer hands when you’re out of position and more hands when you’re in position. When you download free casino games, it doesn’t matter where you sit at the tables. It’s a different situation when you are playing poker versus other people, however.

Go ahead and search for the term “outs” in your online poker dictionary. At any given time if you believe you don’t have the best hand, you should determine the cards that could fall on later streets that likely would improve your hand to the best. These are what you call your “outs”.

Look up the phrase “fold equity”. When you’re trying to win a pot, you should remember that it’s possible to win hands if you bet and your opponents fold. This is called fold equity, and it is vital in poker since it’s a way to win pots without necessarily having the best hand. If you ever try your hand at Daniels Room poker, you’ll discover that the most profitable players employ this idea on a regular basis.

As you read about poker on the internet, you’ll likely read about “nits”. A nit describes a player that plays a very limited number of hands and is afraid to gamble without the best of it. He will rarely put money into the pot if he is not guaranteed to win.

A final term that will be handy to know when you download free poker is “all-in”. Especially prevalent in tournament poker, if you go all-in, you are betting your entire stack and your opponents must call the equivalent of your stack if they want to continue with the hand. If you are called and lose the showdown, you are likely bust and you have to re-buy (if the game allows it) or stop playing.

In a future entry, I will probably list more terms to take a look at. In the meantime, study these terms carefully and see if you can find some strategy articles that use them. Thanks for reading and see you next time!
